Suddenly, Jimmy might as well have been invisible. The older man turned away from him, all his concentration focusing in on another man who was quickly striding toward them. The newcomer looked at least a few years older than George, even if more of his silvery hair had survived the passing years.

“I should have known where you’d be!” There was no real disapproval in his words.

Jimmy looked back to George. He saw the expression on his face and he knew without doubt he was meeting George’s master.

Without a backward glance, George began to walk away as if the ground had opened up and swallowed Jimmy whole, as if no other man actually existed while his master was present.

“But what happened then?” Jimmy blurted out.

George’s master looked over his shoulder at him and met his gaze. A moment later, so did George.

“The end of the story?” Jimmy asked, trying not to sound as desperate as he felt, and knowing that he failed miserably.

George smiled slightly. “The torch was shining on that patch of path,” he said, nodding toward the bit of concrete he’d been staring at when Jimmy first spotted him. “And my master told me…” George looked up at his master.

The other man shook his head slightly, in a long suffering way. But, he also cleared his throat. “I said that I wasn’t working my arse off creating a pretty view for the straight people who just happened to live in the same block of flats as us.” Placing a hand on the small of George’s back the dominant turned away once more and walked them both quickly down the path. Jimmy just about caught the words “soppy sod” before they were out of ear shot, although it was impossible to tell which man had said them.

Jimmy frowned after them, watching them until they turned the corner toward the lake and dense green foliage blocked them from view. Turning around, Jimmy looked down at the path, just as George had stared at it just a few moments before.
